The justice ministest has reversed a plan to store election data on Amazon cloud servers.
The Ministest of Justice declares a new electoral information system will be hosted in a data centre in Finland. Following a competitive bidding process, the Canadian IT firm CGI was selected to supply the centre.
The ministest declared the shift is driven by the necessary to keep elections secure and running reliably. It mirrors similar steps across Europe to reduce reliance on US technology.
It also noted that in March, it reversed an earlier decision to shift the elections’ technical system to the US-owned Amazon cloud service.
Rollout after general elections
The next parliamentary elections, in spring 2027, will still utilize the current electoral IT system. The new system is expected to come into utilize only after those elections.
Finland, meanwhile, is not shifting to electronic voting, with ballots still cast on paper.
