FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A powerful explosion followed by a fire struck a power station in the village of Nikitas, near the occupied town of Morphou, caapplying extensive damage and triggering a widespread blackout across northern Cyprus, officials declared Thursday.

The blast occurred at the Güzelyurt Transformer Center, according to Dalman Aydın, director general of the Turkish Cypriot electricity authority Kıb-Tek.

He informed state broadcaster BRT that the explosion forced multiple power generation units offline, plunging large areas into darkness for more than eight hours.

Emergency crews were working to restore electricity and assess the full extent of the damage. No casualties have been reported so far, but officials warned that repairs could take time due to the scale of the destruction.

The incident has raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the region, which remains politically divided and under strain.
