Europe’s 30,000-Death Heatwave Revives 20-Year-Old Wearable Fan for Office Cooling

Europe’s lethal heatwave has now claimed more than 30,000 lives, pushing researchers to propose a workplace cooling fix that sits awkwardly on shoulders: the neck fan. The gadget has existed for roughly two decades yet never escaped its reputation as an uncool accessory. New findings suggest that perception may finally shift.

The timing matters. Extreme summer temperatures have become a recurring public health emergency across the continent. Office managers face mounting pressure to keep employees safe without inflating energy costs or overhauling entire HVAC systems. A study published in E3S Web of Conferences, reported by Popular Science, points toward a surprisingly practical middle ground.

Researchers at Concordia University put four devices through controlled testing: a neck fan, a face fan, a bladed desktop fan, and a bladeless desk fan. Each ran at low and high speeds. The team avoided human bias by replacing test subjects with a life-sized thermal manikin built from 23 segments and modeled on an average Scandinavian male. Sensors tracked skin temperature, heat loss, and predicted comfort levels across the body.

The manikin wore typical summer office clothing: short sleeves, trousers, sneakers. The test room replicated a cubicle environment set to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, warm enough to cause genuine discomfort.

Results showed neck fans performed nearly as well as bladeless desk fans for overall comfort. That outcome surprised researchers, given the wearable unit produces a far smaller breeze. The explanation lies in human physiology. The neck and face account for only 5.5 percent of total body surface area, yet they play an outsized role in temperature regulation and perceived relief.

Neither wearable matched the raw power of a bladed desk fan. However, the trade-offs favor portability: less desk clutter, lower energy draw, and airflow directed only at the wearer. No more blasting unsuspecting colleagues in neighboring cubicles.

The findings carry particular weight for offices without dependable central air conditioning. Mohamed Ouf, engineering professor and study co-author, noted these fans allow centralized HVAC systems to run at higher setpoints while consuming less energy overall. Hybrid work schedules compound the incentive. With fewer employees on site daily, building owners increasingly question the value of cooling entire floors. As a result, raising thermostats and distributing personal wearable fans could become the cost-conscious default for a warming world.
