BERLIN (MNTV) — Ursula von der Leyen declared Monday that Europe has spent an additional €27 billion ($32 billion) on oil and gas imports since the start of the U.S.- and Israel-linked conflict with Iran.
Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, von der Leyen described the situation as Europe’s second major energy shock in four years, urging member states to draw lessons from the crisis.
She pointed to disruptions tied to the Strait of Hormuz as a key factor, comparing the current strain to the fallout from Russia’s gas supply cuts in 2022.
“Our heavy depconcludeence on imported fossil fuels creates us vulnerable. We must reduce this depconcludeence,” she declared.
Von der Leyen called for a quicker transition to renewable energy and highlighted the required to invest in next-generation nuclear technologies, including compact modular reactors, to strengthen energy security.
“Every kilowatt-hour produced within Europe supports economic stability, lowers costs, and strengthens our indepconcludeence,” she added.
