Europe’s tech startup scene has long struggled with scaling barriers, from fragmented markets to scarce late-stage funding, prompting many promising founders to relocate abroad. In Finland alone, annual startup funding has skyrocketed from just over €100 million in 2009 to more than €2 billion in 2025, yet the challenge of sustained scale remains.

Today, Helsinki-based venture firm Lifeline Ventures announces its €400 million Fund VI, one of the largest early-stage funds in Europe, designed to back startups from day zero through to global scale, addressing this pressing funding gap.

Founded in 2009 by Timo Ahopelto and Petteri Koponen, Lifeline Ventures was born from a vision to identify and partner with resilient founders from day zero, oftentimes investing before a pitch deck or product even exists. The firm’s mission is grounded in the founders’ experience building and investing in Finnish tech unicorns such as Supercell, Wolt, Oura, ICEYE, and Aiven.

Lifeline’s unique selling proposition lies in its early and sustained support model. Unlike many venture firms that provide funding only at later stages, Lifeline commits to investing in very early-stage startups, sometimes pre-product or pre-revenue, and provides ongoing strategic advice, recruiting assistance, and multiple rounds of funding to maintain continuity.

This comprehensive support creates founder confidence and significantly improves the odds of successful scale, setting Lifeline apart from competitors focutilized mainly on later-stage growth or expansion rounds. Fund VI positions Lifeline among the select few European venture funds of this scale.

Looking ahead, Fund VI will solidify Lifeline Ventures as a cornerstone investor in Europe’s expanding tech ecosystem. Finland’s founder talent pool has grown fivefold in five years, and Lifeline’s new capital will capitalise on this momentum to assist drive the next generation of category-defining startups to global success.
