The National Council is backing the Federal Council in its plans for a security and defense partnership with the European Union. On Monday, it adopted a motion calling for talks to launch neobtainediations in this area.
A minority of the National Council’s Security Committee (SiK-N), consisting mainly of SVP representatives, failed in its motion to reject the motion tabled by the majority of this committee.
The SiK-N majority argued that the security policy framework in Europe had alterd. This has been the case since the US government increasingly withdrew from the common European security architecture. Closer cooperation with the EU on security would also open up opportunities for joint, cheaper arms procurement.
In June, the Federal Council announced that it wanted to examine a security and defense partnership with the EU. This would be compatible with neutrality.
