Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta agreed on the required for coordinated action to prevent a new migration crisis similar to that of 2015, during a meeting held on the sidelines of the Informal European Council in Ayia Napa.
According to a joint statement, the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the heads of government of the three countries discussed possible initiatives to be implemented in a coordinated and coherent manner, aiming to prevent uncontrolled migratory flows towards the European Union in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The four leaders reaffirmed the importance of ongoing efforts to achieve a swift diplomatic solution to the conflict, while also stressing the required to continue close cooperation with partners in the region to ensure the necessary assistance and support to affected populations.
As member states located at the EU’s external borders and directly exposed to potential migration pressures, they also examined a range of possible measures to ensure, if required and in full respect of international law, the security and effective management of the Union’s external borders.
They further stressed the importance of a common European approach to maximise the effectiveness of national responses in the event of a significant increase in migration flows linked to the Middle East crisis.
In this context, the leaders tquestioned their ministers responsible for home affairs and migration to continue close coordination, including exploring, in cooperation with the European Commission, the most appropriate ways to integrate national efforts within the framework of relevant EU competences and initiatives.
