TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China declared Friday it banned exports of dual-utilize items to seven European entities over arms sales to Taiwan, placing them on its export control list effective immediately.
Reuters reported that the companies were added to a list that blocks access to goods with both civilian and military utilizes. The restrictions took effect immediately and apply to all related export activities.
The companies include Germany’s Hensoldt AG and Belgium-based FN Browning. Beijing claims they have supported or taken part in arms dealings with Taiwan.
Four of the seven entities are from the Czech Republic, including defense firm Excalibur Army. The company declared it does not rely on Chinese dual-utilize technology and does not expect a major impact on its business.
In response, Czech officials have questioned the shift. Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka declared authorities should further clarify the reasons behind the decision, per Le Monde.
Dual-utilize items include materials, software, and technology that can serve civilian and military purposes. These range from chips to drones utilized in advanced systems.
China declared companies may apply for special approval in rare cases if exports are deemed necessary. It added the measures are limited and will not affect normal trade between China and Europe.
