Bungie plans to sublease nearly 211,000 square feet of its sprawling Bellevue, Washington headquarters, a move that follows months of deep staffing cuts and signals a permanent shift toward remote work for the studio behind Destiny and Marathon.
The company confirmed the listing after commercial leasing documents surfaced, advertising the space as available through September 30, 2035. That long horizon has rattled some fans already anxious about the studio’s trajectory, though Bungie framed the decision as a practical response to its “digital-first” operating model.
A spokesperson told The Game Post that the studio adopted this remote-friendly approach several years ago. The spokesperson added that Bungie will keep some physical office presence in Bellevue, but the team’s evolving workplace needs and successful remote collaboration made the downsizing logical. The advertisement itself spans ten pages and details the specific square footage now open for subtenants.
Community reaction split between pragmatism and worry. Some players pointed out that after shedding hundreds of employees, the company simply cannot justify filling such a massive campus. “400-something people aren’t gonna be able to use that space in full,” one fan wrote on X, “and it’s better than letting it collect dust.” Others expressed disappointment, wishing the studio could scale up to multiple projects rather than contract further.
The layoffs provide critical context. Bungie cut 292 employees at the Bellevue office in June, marking the third round of reductions in as many years. The Seattle Times reported that this single location employed roughly 1,000 people in 2023, meaning the headquarters has lost nearly a third of its workforce since then. An additional 320 staffers departed between October 2023 and July 2024.
Meanwhile, fan frustration has grown louder. During PlayStation’s September State of Play, viewers flooded the live chat with Destiny 3 requests. Bungie ended support for Destiny 2 earlier this year to focus on Marathon, and reports indicated that a proposed relaunch under the name Destiny Infinity was scrapped before gaining traction.
