Amazon plans to eliminate close to 150 roles across its Bay Area locations, adding to a wave of tech sector layoffs hitting the region.
The company informed California employment officials that 148 positions will disappear, split between 78 in San Francisco and 70 in Sunnyvale. Those cuts begin Oct. 20.
Most of the San Francisco reductions target technical staff. At the company’s 350 Bush St. office downtown, 76 affected workers hold technical staff titles. A software development engineer and a senior manager in user experience and design round out the list.
Meanwhile, Sunnyvale faces losses among software engineers, applied scientists, data scientists, quality assurance engineers, and technical program managers, according to the filing. Amazon offered no explanation for the reductions.
These latest moves follow a larger purge announced in January, when Amazon revealed roughly 16,000 global job cuts aimed at flattening management structures and reducing bureaucracy.
Synopsys, another major tech employer headquartered in Sunnyvale, filed its own notice Monday. The chip design software company plans to permanently cut 128 positions at its Sunnyvale campus starting Dec. 16.
Those layoffs concentrate heavily in engineering and research and development roles, spanning dozens of job classifications. The reductions stem from a wider corporate restructuring tied to Synopsys’ acquisition of engineering software firm Ansys.
A regulatory filing from last week indicated the restructuring will involve involuntary separations and some facility closures, with the process extending through 2027.
