French diagnostics giant jettisons Silicon Valley site, slashing 121 Bay Area jobs

Global biotech company exits Silicon Valley, 121 jobs cut

A French diagnostics powerhouse will shutter its Silicon Valley facility, eliminating 121 jobs in San Jose.

bioMérieux filed a permanent closure notice with California employment officials last week, according to state records. The layoffs will hit every worker at its 130 Baytech Drive location on April 3.

The move ends the company’s Bay Area presence entirely. The San Jose site, acquired in 2022, housed scientists, engineers, and quality control teams supporting its diagnostic platforms.

Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Marcy-l’Étoile near Lyon, France, bioMérieux ranks among the world’s leading in vitro diagnostics firms. Its testing systems serve medical microbiology, infectious disease detection, food safety, and pharmaceutical quality control. The family-controlled company operates across the globe with tens of thousands of employees.

The closure arrives despite strong financial performance. The company’s third-quarter filing showed 7.3% organic sales growth over the first nine months of the year, with total sales approaching $3.5 billion.

The state filing offered no explanation for the shutdown. Operations will continue from its French headquarters and other international facilities.

The move reflects a broader pattern of biotech consolidation across Silicon Valley as companies reassess regional footprints amid shifting market pressures.
