A German space startup just punched through Europe’s orbital launch ceiling. From a remote pad high above the Arctic Circle, Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit on September 5, carrying five small satellites and rewriting the rules for who gets to launch from the continent.
The stakes go far beyond one successful flight. For years, European governments and companies have watched their launch options narrow. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 dominated the commercial market, while Europe’s own Ariane 6 and Vega C remained anchored to a launch site in French Guiana. The loss of Russian Soyuz flights after 2022 left a painful gap. Operators scrambled to book rides they would have preferred not to need.
Spectrum’s success changes that calculation. Standing 28 meters tall and powered by nine Aquila engines burning liquid oxygen and propane, the vehicle delivered its payloads to sun-synchronous orbit from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway. The site sits roughly 300 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, enabling high-inclination missions that serve Earth observation, defense, and communications customers.
The milestone didn’t happen quickly. Spectrum’s first attempt ended in a fireball 524 days earlier, on March 30, 2025. The rocket wobbled seconds after liftoff, lost attitude control, and plunged into the Norwegian Sea. Investigators traced the failure to a pressure relief valve malfunction and mischaracterized bending modes that confused the flight control system.
Since then, at least six launch windows slipped over eight months. A pressurization valve issue in January. Weather and a stray vessel in March. A suspected pressure vessel leak in April. A fluid system anomaly in June. A readiness shortfall in August.
Now Isar Aerospace claims the first commercial orbital launch from continental Europe. Chief Executive Daniel Metzler called it “genuine alternative” for customers who need compact, fast launches. The company reports defense-related demand now accounts for roughly 60% of its pipeline.
Financially, Isar stands alone among European launch startups. A €270 million Series D round in June brought cumulative funding to about €870 million. ESA has backed the company since its incubator phase and selected it for the European Launcher Challenge, which required an orbital launch no later than 2027. Saturday’s flight met that threshold first, ahead of Rocket Factory Augsburg and Spain’s PLD Space.
Meanwhile, competition is gathering. Sweden’s Esrange facility and Britain’s SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands both want a piece of the Arctic launch market. Andøya itself has hosted more than 1,200 suborbital launches since 1962. Spectrum’s second flight is the first from any continental European site to stay in orbit.
The next test: whether Isar can turn a single success into production cadence. Its Bavarian facility aims for up to 40 rockets per year. Vehicles three through seven are already being built.
