An AbbVie arthritis drug has reversed severe hair loss in clinical trials, with more than half of participants regrowing substantial scalp coverage within half a year. The results position upadacitinib, sold under the name Rinvoq, as a potential breakthrough for a condition that affects roughly seven million Americans.
European regulators recently cleared the medication specifically for alopecia areata. AbbVie now awaits a decision from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Alopecia areata occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leaving behind round bald patches. The disorder often first appears in childhood and carries a heavy psychological toll. Patients currently have only one approved treatment option, and it fails to work for everyone.
The drug blocks Janus kinase proteins, which drive the inflammatory cascade behind autoimmune diseases. In arthritis, that misdirected immune response damages joints. In alopecia areata, it destroys hair follicles instead.
Trial researchers focused on patients who had lost at least half their scalp hair, a group notoriously difficult to treat. Success meant recovering 80 percent or more scalp coverage.
After six months, 45 percent of patients on the 15-milligram dose hit that target. The figure climbed to 55 percent among those taking 30 milligrams.
Those results outpace competing therapies. Baricitinib achieved similar outcomes in 35 to 40 percent of patients, while deuruxolitinib reached 31 percent and ritlecitinib managed just 23 percent.
Some participants far exceeded the benchmark. At the higher dose, 46 percent recovered 90 percent coverage. Nearly a quarter saw complete regrowth.
Most patients on 30 milligrams also regained eyebrow and eyelash hair.
FDA clearance would formally open the U.S. market. Meanwhile, American doctors can already prescribe Rinvoq off-label for hair loss.
Roopal Thakkar, AbbVie’s chief scientific officer, called the EU approval a meaningful step for patients dealing with both the physical and emotional weight of severe alopecia areata, a burden often dismissed because of stigma.
