Europe Wants Independence from US Game Engines, But Godot is the Real Challenger

Europe is pushing for independence from American-dominated game engines like Unreal and Unity. Guerrilla Games co-founder and former Epic Games tech director Arjan Brussee is spearheading “The Immense Engine,” an ambitious European-built game engine designed to shield the continent’s gaming industry from trade war vulnerabilities. Speaking on Dutch podcast De Technoloog, Brussee argued that existing engines restrict creators through their structural design. However, the initiative faces a significant obstacle: the already-thriving open-source engine Godot, which presents a formidable homegrown alternative that complicates the case for building something entirely new.
