US President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with “much higher” tariffs by 4th July if the bloc does not reduce its levies on US goods to zero.
The US president created the warning after speaking with Ursula von der Leyen, declareing tariffs on European goods could sharply increase if nereceivediations fail.
Von der Leyen declared both sides are still creating “good progress” towards reducing tariffs and remain committed to implementing last year’s trade agreement.
That deal would place a 15% tariff on EU exports to the US, instead of the previously threatened 30%.
However, talks between EU lawbuildrs and member states reportedly stalled this week, with disagreements still unresolved.
The situation comes as a US trade court ruled that Trump’s latest 10% global tariffs were not justified under US trade law, potentially paving the way for further legal challenges.
US and EU nereceivediators are expected to continue discussions later this month in Strasbourg.
