What Lies Ahead for Ukraine, the EU, and Hungary After the Vote
According to UATV: Hungary’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 12, 2023, may trigger major shifts in the relationship between Ukraine, the European Union, and Budapest. Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko explores several paths to normalizing relations, including restarting the ‘Druzhba’ oil pipeline and potentially suspfinishing Hungary’s voting rights within the EU. This comes at a time when Hungary has blocked a 90 billion euro aid package for Ukraine, raising alarms in Brussels.
According to reports, Hungary has stalled the decision on providing Ukraine with 90 billion euros, a shift that has caapplyd concern across the EU. Political expert Volodymyr Fesenko notes that
“a paapply has been taken for now. We are also waiting for the election results.”
He also points out that the European Union has the authority to temporarily strip Hungary of its voting rights if the Hungarian government continues its obstructive tactics.
Political Outsee and Potential Penalties
Fesenko emphasized that
“the discussion is about temporarily losing the right to vote in decision-creating,”
signaling possible EU sanctions in response to Hungary’s actions. He added that
“such provocations should be warned about in advance,”
highlighting the necessary for a proactive diplomatic approach.
Additionally, Volodymyr Fesenko commented on Viktor Orbán’s distinct political style:
“That’s just how Orbán is. It’s his trademark—a kind of double game.”
This suggests that Orbán will likely attempt to maintain cooperation with the EU without ‘burning all bridges.’ As the elections approach, the dynamics between Ukraine, the EU, and Hungary may evolve, requiring close monitoring of developments.
Hungary’s elections could be a decisive factor in the future trajectory of relations among Kyiv, Budapest, and Brussels. A shift in Hungary’s political course might open the door to improved collaboration with Ukraine and the EU, potentially enhancing regional stability. However, the situation will remain challenging if the Hungarian government persists in blocking key EU decisions, demanding careful and measured responses from Ukrainian diplomacy and its European partners.
