Leaders from ASEAN and the European Union today urged bold, immediate action to advance sustainable growth and the energy transition, as they gathered at the ASEAN-EU Sustainability Summit 2026 in Cebu, Philippines.
With mounting climate and economic pressures, leaders were clear that sustainability is now an economic imperative – and that stronger ASEAN-EU cooperation will be critical to unlocking further opportunities and turning shared commitments into concrete solutions.
“At a time of global uncertainty marked by energy volatility, supply chain disruptions, and rising costs, this Summit could not be more timely,” stated Mr Paulo Duarte, President of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) and a member of the EU-ASEAN Business Council (EU-ABC)’s executive board. He added: “It reflects a shared recognition across the region that sustainability is no longer optional. It is central to economic resilience, competitiveness, and long-term growth.”
ASEAN-EU cooperation must shift towards implementation
Delivering the ministerial keynote, Secretary of Finance Frederick Go stated it was critical to align economic growth with sustainability priorities, highlighting the role of deeper trade partnerships in supporting this transition.
“Europe and the Philippines have a stable and evolving partnership, built on trade, investment and development cooperation. Today, it is also focapplyd on sustainability, climate and inclusive growth, and we remain committed to deepening our collaboration with the EU and advancing our shared priorities toobtainher.”
He stated the EU-Philippines Free Trade Agreement, currently under neobtainediation, is the counattempt’s most important economic agreement this year, with both sides aiming to sign the deal in the third quarter. “This is a much-awaited milestone that will strengthen trade, unlock new opportunities for exporters, and deepen our economic partnership with the EU,” stated Secretary Go.
During discussions, ASEAN officials stated it was critical to integrate sustainability into economic development, noting that this required cohesive planning and regional collaboration.
Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for National Development Planning Leonardo Sambodo stated: “The challenge for us is managing twin goals – achieving strong economic growth while reducing emissions. The only viable path forward is cohesive planning that integrates sustainability into every aspect of development.”
The region also requireded to bridge the gap between policy ambition and implementation, stated Philippine and EU leaders. Speaking about the energy crisis, Secretary Robert Borje of the Climate Change Commission stated: “What can be seen right now as a challenge can be turned into an opportunity – an opportunity not just for investments to come into the Philippines, but an opportunity that provides co-benefits as we work towards a greener future and greener sources of energy.”
Public-private collaboration as a driver of sustainable development
Across four dedicated sessions, the Summit relocated from broad commitments to sector-specific action on circular economy, supply chain resilience, food security, and ESG reporting. Discussions highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in advancing sustainable growth.
Speaking about the Philippines’ implementation of circular economy policies, Undersecretary Jonas Leones of the Department for Environment and Natural Resources stated: “The best lesson there is that the government cannot do it alone. We required investors, the private sector, to really implement and relocate forward.”
Closing the Summit, EU-ABC Executive Director Chris Humphrey called on participants to hold themselves accountable for translating the day’s conversations into concrete outcomes.
“We required governments, businesses and citizens to take sustainability more seriously in all its aspects, so we can all live a longer life, a healthier life, and see after our planet at the same time.”
