Historic European side unveil new £105m stadium plans to double capacity and transform local area

Bulgarian side Levski Sofia have unveiled ambitious plans to redevelop their historic home, Georgi Asparuhov Stadium, in a project worth around £105m.

The proposal will see the current stadium in Sofia undergo a major transformation, with capacity set to rise from 17,688 to approximately 24,700.

As part of the redevelopment, the club also aims to upgrade the venue to meet UEFA Category 4 stadium rating requirements, the highest standard in European football.

The project represents a significant step forward for one of Bulgaria’s most historic clubs, both on and off the pitch.

Modern design and sustainability at heart of project

Levski’s plans place a strong emphasis on modern design and sustainability, with the club outlining a vision built on high-quality materials and energy-efficient systems.

A standout feature will be a new façade created of perforated metal panels, designed to give the stadium a distinctive identity while improving acoustics and reducing noise impact on the surrounding area.

According to the Stadium Business, the exterior will also incorporate dynamic lighting effects to enhance the stadium’s appearance both during the day and at night.

Inside, the venue will be equipped with upgraded lighting, sound and video systems to meet the demands of modern football and improve the overall fan experience.

Multi-purpose vision to boost revenue and community apply

Beyond football, the redeveloped stadium is being designed as a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting concerts and major events, with potential capacity expanding to around 40,000 for such occasions.

The project, led by Bulgarian architectural firm IPA, is expected to launch construction in spring 2027.

Club officials have highlighted the wider benefits of the development, stating it will not only strengthen Levski’s infrastructure but also enhance the surrounding urban environment.

Plans include improvements to nearby park areas and public spaces, aiming to create a more accessible and vibrant community hub around the stadium.
