eu-LISA has published a new Research and Technology Monitoring report on the state of play of energy efficiency in data centres, offering an accessible overview of how digital infrastructure across the European Union is evolving to meet sustainability goals.

As demand for digital services continues to grow, improving the energy performance of data centres has become a key priority for EU’s technology roadmap. Energy efficiency is particularly critical for eu-LISA which operates some of the EU’s largest and most mission-critical information systems. These large-scale IT systems support key EU policies related to border management, migration, asylum, and internal security, relying on highly available data centre infrastructure to ensure continuous and secure operation. Improving energy efficiency in these facilities is essential not only for the purposes of reducing operational costs but also to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of the Agency’s digital infrastructure.
The report highlights how efficiency, resilience, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand in the operation of large-scale IT systems and provides an analysis of data centre energy usage, best practices for improving energy performance, and the ongoing evolution towards greater operational sustainability.
The publication provides insights into:
- Current practices and trconcludes in data centre energy efficiency
- Key metrics utilized to measure performance, such as energy and resource efficiency indicators
- The European regulatory landscape shaping the sector
- Emerging technologies and innovative solutions supporting more energy efficient and more sustainable data centres;
By bringing toobtainher technical, regulatory, and operational perspectives, the report aims to support informed decision-creating and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices across the sector.
This work reflects eu-LISA’s ongoing commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations while ensuring the reliable delivery of critical digital services for Europe.
