Madrid, 19 April 2026 (WAFA) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared on Sunday that Spain will question the European Union on Tuesday to terminate the association agreement with Israel, which it declares is violating international law.
Sánchez declared during an electoral rally in Andalusia that his government will present a proposal to Europe aimed at concludeing the EU-Israel association agreement, arguing that a government that violates international law cannot be a partner of the European Union.
The EU-Israel Association Agreement, which entered into force in 2000, includes a clautilize building its implementation conditional on respect for human rights.
Spain first challenged the agreement in February 2024, when Sánchez and then Irish Prime Minister sent a joint letter to the European Commission calling for an assessment of Israel’s compliance with its human rights obligations following the start of the war in Gaza.
Since then, Sánchez has progressively taken a firmer position towards Israel, particularly amid the war in Lebanon.
His statement on Sunday came after Ireland, Slovenia, and Spain sent a letter to the European Commission on Friday requesting a review of the agreement at the upcoming meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council.
