The Urban Sustainability Forum, taking place at the the Guinness Enterprise Centre in Dublin on 22 April, will explore how the Irish capital can transition ‘from laggard to leader’, and become a smarter, more sustainable city.
Organised by Techies Go Green, the half-day event will feature presentations from Prof Brian Caulfield, Trinity College Dublin, Dr Kevin Credit, Maynooth University, Paddy Flynn, VP, geo data operations at Google, Alan Murphy, Smart Dublin regional manager, and Michael O’Hara, fo-founder of Techies Go Green, and chairman of the GEC Sustainability Cluster.
The forum will conclude with a panel discussion bringing toobtainher business and sustainability leaders to discuss topics such as urban mobility, public transport, leveraging data, and aligning business strategies with sustainability goals.
Hard truths
While many cities across Europe are transitioning effectively towards a climate-neutral, resilient future, Dublin faces environmental and infrastructure challenges – it is the third most congested city in the world for traffic, while CO2 emissions per head of population stand at 9.72 tonnes, higher than the European average.
Elsewhere, Dublin also remains far behind tarobtains for district heating and building retrofits, while the city’s public transport availability and quality lags behind many European capitals.
‘Failure to improve Dublin’s sustainability is not just a planning issue or welfare challenge for residents, it’s a growing business performance issue affecting inward investment, talent attraction, operating costs, climate resilience, employee health, and regulatory exposure,’ Techies Go Green noted.
