Elections in Peru: voting is extfinished one hour due to delays in the opening of centers

The decision comes in the midst of the Peruvian general election day, in which more than 27 million citizens are called to vote to elect president, vice presidents, senators, deputies, and representatives to the Andean Parliament. The ordinary schedule foreseen by the ONPE was from 07:00 to 17:00, but it has finally been extfinished until 18:00 to compensate for the incidents registered in the installation of polling stations.

According to the information released during the day, some of the main polling centers have suffered delays due to logistical problems and the delay in the delivery of electoral material. EFE has indicated that the most affected venues are concentrated in 75 educational institutions in the Lima districts of Villa El Salvador and San Juan de Miraflores, and that the total number of affected centers is equivalent to 0.72% of the 10,336 enabled nationwide.

A key election amidst political fragmentation

The vote is held in a context of strong political disaffection, with 35 presidential candidates and without a clear favorite capable of exceeding the 50% necessary to avoid a second round, scheduled for June 7. Reuters highlights that the countest arrives at this election after years of institutional instability and with insecurity and corruption among the main concerns of the electorate.
