Cleaning brand Homethings has revealed it is utilizing Kelpi’s seaweed-based coatings for the next generation of its refill sachets.
The two companies, both certified B Corps, hope the initiative will assist to ‘accelerate positive environmental modify’. Homethings offers refill sachets for its washing up liquid and cleaning spray products.
Kelpi states that its bioplastic packaging is biodegradable and marine-safe, decomposing in less than a year after apply without leaving toxins behind.
Matthew Aubrey, founder of Homethings, declares: “We’ve been really impressed with the performance of the Kelpi material, and we love the story behind Kelpi’s mission and products. With Kelpi we’re able to apply a material with better sustainability that also creates a better product for our customers.”
In related news, Australian startup Uluu secured over €7 million in Series A funding last year to build a demonstration plant for the industrial production of its materials, a home compostable seaweed alternative to plastic. The material is stated to be lightweight, waterproof and non-toxic while being climate positive at scale.
More recently, rapid food chain Kwalitaria announced it would be serving fries and snacks on Notpla’s cardboard trays with a seaweed-based coating. Estimated to eliminate 6.9 tonnes of plastic waste and 102.5 tonnes of CO2 annually, Notpla’s solution is stated to be home-compostable and avoid the generation of microplastics.
