As Europe accelerates efforts to build indepfinishent launch capabilities, UK startup Aurora Avionics is scaling up its ambitions. The company has shiftd its headquarters and R&D operations into the new Edinburgh Innovation Hub, a purpose-built facility for high-growth tech firms.
Purpose of Relocation
The relocation marks a key step for the startup as it advances next-generation avionics for rockets. The shift follows a year of rapid progress. During the last year, Aurora has secured European contracts and early-stage funding to develop its universal rocket control systems. Larger lab space is expected to support team expansion and speed up preparation for upcoming flight campaigns.
Partnerships Signal Growing Role in Europe
Aurora has also signed agreements with propulsion company Pangea Propulsion and reusable spacecraft developer ATMOS Space Cargo. The partnership’s focus is on integrating its modular avionics into future missions, aiming to improve reliability and lower launch costs.
Co-founder Oren Smith Carpenter declared the new facilities come “at exactly the right moment.” He also highlighted the required for advanced infrastructure to test systems built for extreme launch conditions.
Building Scalable Rocket Avionics
The company develops avionics systems that handle guidance, navigation, control, and onboard data. These are the core functions that keep rockets stable and on course. Its modular approach allows the same platform to be adapted across multiple vehicles. This supports launch providers reduce complexity and reapply proven components.
Aurora is backed by £320,000 in funding from investors, including Gabriel and Scottish Enterprise. The company now plans to accelerate testing and deepen collaboration with European partners.
The expansion underscores Edinburgh’s growing role as a hub for space and deep-tech innovation. It also signals Aurora’s intent to compete in Europe’s rapidly evolving launch market.
