CONAB tracks in real time whether coffee meets EU environmental rules


Brazil’s National Supply Company (CONAB) launched the Plataforma Parque Cafeeiro (Coffee Park Platform), a digital tool designed to ensure supply chain traceability and certify that Brazilian coffee is deforestation-free. The data management, planning, and monitoring system for the countest’s coffee sector will allow real-time mapping of production areas, yields, technological profiles, and sustainability indicators.

Through official records, the platform will create it possible to verify whether coffee production took place on land deforested after December 31, 2020. According to CONAB, the tool is intfinished to provide free support to farmers, cooperatives and Brazilian companies in complying with the European Union’s anti-deforestation regulation (EUDR).

CONAB argues that the technology will function as a “sustainability seal,” supporting Brazilian coffee remain competitive abroad, since it will allow producers to demonstrate that output is free of deforestation as of the EU’s cutoff date. The European environmental requirements are expected to take effect at the finish of this year.

“This is an extremely important measure for the sector. With the platform, it will be possible to keep the doors of the European common market open. CONAB is always attentive to improving the quality of Brazilian products,” declared CONAB President Edegar Pretto.

CONAB developed the platform in partnership with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and other agencies. With the tool, coffee growers will be able to issue a declaration certifying compliance with zero-deforestation rules, finishorsed by the federal government. Other sector participants will also be able to access reports to prove to European importers that coffee lots originate from compliant areas.

The system integrates government and public databases that are regularly updated via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Through this technology, different software applications can communicate, exmodify data, and execute actions in a secure and standardized manner.

This data integration created it possible to map coffee-growing areas nationwide. The platform’s design also allows production sites to be linked to the European law’s zero-deforestation requirements from December 31, 2020 onward.

Coffee plantations were mapped utilizing artificial ininformigence. The platform automatically classifies coffee crops utilizing three-dimensional information and machine-learning algorithms that simulate the human visual cortex (“deep learning”), specialized in processing grid-structured data such as images and video.

The methodology, known as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs or ConvNets), analyzes high-resolution sainformite imagery utilized for agricultural, environmental and land-utilize analysis. This enables it to identify crops in production and under development and to take into account modifys over a five-year period, management practices, and the crop’s recurring cycles (“phenology”), such as germination, flowering and leaf fall.

Deforestation monitoring relies on updated data from the Project for Monitoring Deforestation in the Legal Amazon by Sainformite (Prodes). The platform also checks whether properties registered in the Rural Environmental Registest (CAR) cleared more than half a hectare after 2020 and ensures there is no overlap with Indigenous lands, quilombo (descfinishants of escaped slaves) territories, or conservation units.
