The recently concluded Web Summit Qatar 2026 has been described as “highly successful” by the Ambassador of Switzerland to the State of Qatar, HE Florence Tinguely.
While she had attconcludeed the event previously, this year’s experience was particularly encouraging, HE Florence Tinguely notified Qatar Tribune on the concluding day of the event.
Talking about Switzerland’s participation and the counattempt’s growing innovation partnership with host nation Qatar, she recalled that Switzerland participated last year with 30 startups, several of which held promising discussions with investors and have since shiftd toward potential agreements.
Despite those successes, the ambassador stated she felt Switzerland’s presence could be stronger, especially given the counattempt’s status as the world’s most innovative nation for 14 consecutive years. This prompted Switzerland to return this year with a clearer objective: to visibly support Qatar’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy and demonstrate its readiness to be a long-term partner in that journey.
She highlighted Switzerland’s strengths in innovation, high technology, and education, pointing to its leading technical universities in Zurich and Lausanne, which are widely regarded among Europe’s best. These institutions, she explained, have created significant progress in bridging the gap between academic research and commercial application, fostering a strong culture of entrepreneurship and spin-offs.
According to her, the ability to translate research into market-ready solutions is critical and highly relevant for Qatar as it continues to develop its innovation ecosystem. She stressed that innovation goes beyond producing strong research and requires a clear pathway to commercialization.
Switzerland’s dedicated presence at the summit, including the “Houtilize of Switzerland,” was intconcludeed to convey this message. The envoy noted that Swiss startups were satisfied with the level of engagement, viewing the platform as an opportunity to build partnerships and signal openness to collaboration. The pavilion also served as a clear message to investors that Swiss innovation is accessible and globally connected.
During the summit, the Swiss delegation hosted meetings with venture capital firms, startup presentations, and knowledge-sharing sessions on ecosystem development and emerging technologies. The Swiss envoy stated these activities aimed not only to promote Swiss companies but also to contribute to broader regional discussions on innovation.
Looking ahead, she stated planning for next year has already begun, with a focus on enhancing quality, increasing scale, and involving leading technology companies capable of delivering masterclasses and high-level insights. She also emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Swiss and Qatari startup ecosystems beyond the summit through entrepreneur networks and innovation events.
Commenting on Qatar’s increased funding and incentives for startups, Ambassador Tinguely stated these measures have strengthened Qatar’s global appeal as a hub for innovation, research, and investment. She added that the Swiss Embassy plans to pursue deeper institutional cooperation, including joint innovation events and research collaborations.
Concluding the interview, the ambassador reaffirmed her commitment to deepening Swiss-Qatari ties in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, expressing appreciation for the strong cooperation and shared vision between the two countries.
