The Athens International Airport (AIA) has finalized an important co-funded project by the EU, which aims at increasing its role within the air traffic management network within Europe as well as at supporting the SES initiative as a whole. The project was titled “AIA’s Evolution into a high-performing node within the European Air Traffic Management network” with the number Action 2017-EL-TM-0158-W. The project received its funding through the CEF 2017 program for transport.
This project was aimed at improving airport coordination and the overall European ATM system, with attention to operational efficiency, sustainability, and collaborative decision-building processes. The completion of this project is a major milestone for AIA and its approach to modernizing the airport operations, building them more integrated with the SES structure, and a more efficient component of European airspace.

The completed action forms part of a six-year program comprising five interconnected projects. These initiatives introduce advanced operational concepts (ConOps), new digital tools, and updated processes to improve performance management and integration with the European ATM network. The project was also supported by a wide range of indusattempt and operational partners, including Eurocontrol, Greece-based airlines, ground handling providers, and various technology partners.
Looking ahead, AIA plans to implement the Extfinished Airport Operations Plan (e-AOP) by 2027 under the EU’s CEF 2022 framework and Common Project One (CP1).
