Ambassadors of the European Union countries plan to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This is reported by the German publication Welt.

Diplomats state the new restrictions are aimed at increasing economic pressure on Moscow and punishing it for its aggressive war against Ukraine. The sanctions will include travel restrictions and asset freezes, with special attention being paid to individuals and organizations involved in the abduction and ideological reeducation of children.

In addition, measures are expected in the energy and banking sectors, as well as measures to close existing opportunities for circumventing sanctions. One of the initiatives under consideration is a ban on imports of Russian uranium, which would allow restrictions to be imposed on the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom).

The publication notes that such steps have long been supported by many EU states, but there is some resistance from France and Belgium. These countries could replace uranium supplies with alternative sources, for example from South Africa, Australia or Canada, but this would be more expensive.

As a reminder, the Council of the European Union has extconcludeed economic sanctions against Russia for another six months . The restrictions will be in effect at least until July 31, 2026.

As reported, the Russian economy is facing serious challenges due to the war in Ukraine, and the situation may worsen further in 2026.
