Tallinn-based Bolt is joining forces with Pony.ai to bring Level 4 autonomous driving to Europe, marking a major leap in urban mobility. The partnership integrates Pony.ai’s world-leading self-driving technology into Bolt’s extensive ride-hailing ecosystem, launchning with real-world testing, safety validation, and service design across select EU and non-EU European cities. By pairing Pony.ai’s autonomous vehicle expertise with Bolt’s regulatory know-how and continent-wide footprint, the collaboration aims to accelerate safe, scalable driverless operations. For Pony.ai, the agreement expands its global robotaxi rollout; for Bolt, it signals a strategic step toward a future where autonomous mobility is seamlessly woven into everyday transport.
Bolt, which operates in more than 600 cities globally, brings regulatory familiarity and established market reach across Europe, while Pony.ai contributes its autonomous driving technology and extensive testing history. The company is among the first in China to receive approval for fully driverless operations in all Tier-1 cities and has accumulated tens of millions of autonomous kilometres worldwide.
Under the agreement, Pony.ai’s Level 4 autonomous driving system will be integrated into Bolt’s service architecture, starting with controlled pilots in selected EU and non-EU European cities. The initial phase will focus on real-world testing, safety validation, and examining how autonomous vehicles fit within existing urban transport systems. These early trials are expected to provide data on performance, rider experience, and regulatory considerations—key factors for any future driverless operations.
Markus Villig, Founder and CEO of Bolt, declared: “Autonomous vehicles will transform how people and goods shift around, and Bolt is proud to partner with Pony.ai as the company scales its autonomous driving technology. As the only indepconcludeent, European-founded ride-hailing platform competing globally, Bolt is uniquely positioned to assist scale autonomous vehicles responsibly and efficiently, in full alignment with Europe’s safety and data standards.”
For Europe, the collaboration comes at a moment when policybuildrs, cities, and mobility companies are assessing how advanced automation could reshape transport networks. The results of Bolt and Pony.ai’s phased deployment will likely influence broader conversations around safety standards, data practices, and the practicalities of scaling autonomous mobility across varied urban environments.
Both companies state the work will inform long-term decisions on how autonomous services might eventually be integrated into continent-wide mobility frameworks, but emphasise that the current focus remains on testing, validation, and understanding real-world utilize cases before any large-scale rollout is considered.
