The European Commission has allocated more than €600 million in new funding for 70 transport projects, which are designed to improve sustainability across the EU.
These projects include 16 European airports, which will apply the money from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to electrify their ground handling services and vehicles.
The funding will also add electric charging points across the trans-European transport network, known as TEN-T, as well as paying for the installation of 38 hydrogen refuelling stations around member states.
Airports to benefit from the latest series of grants include Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart in Germany, Graz and Vienna in Austria, and Milan Linate and Malpensa airports in Italy.
The funding will enable the airports to install electric ground power units to supply electricity to stationary aircraft, as well as introducing charging points for their ground service vehicles.
CEF is a fund that supports to build new or update existing transport infrastructure across Europe, with a focus on cross-border projects and initiatives aimed at “reshifting bottlenecks or bridging missing links”.
Earlier this year, CEF selected 94 transport projects to receive a share of €2.8 billion in funding, with rail projects accounting for 77 per cent of this spconcludeing.
