An Italian-Libyan joint venture has been established to export seafood from Libya to European markets, Italian businessman Nicholas Giacalone has announced.
In remarks to the Italian news agency Nova, Giacalone stated the new company, named Mediterranean Bridge, is a partnership between Italy’s Medina and Libya’s Al-Rubyan Fishing Company.
Based in the Misrata Free Zone, the company aims not only to export seafood but also to transfer expertise and technology to support develop Libya’s fishing indusattempt. A modern processing and packaging facility will be set up in Misrata applying advanced digital technologies to ensure quality and efficiency.
Training programmes for young Libyan fishermen will also be introduced in vocational schools, combining classroom learning with practical sea-based experience.
A joint brand, Marsablo, will be launched to certify Libyan seafood products under sustainability, food safety and quality standards — raising their market value and competitiveness abroad.
The project’s first phase includes a study of fish resources along the coast between Sirte and western Tripoli applying trawl survey technology. Giacalone stated the project will employ nets designed to protect turtles and finishangered species by keeping them safely elevated above the seabed.
