The Estonian Minisattempt of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday that the UN Security Council will convene its extraordinary meeting in connection with the penetration of three Russian aircraft into the airspace of Estonia. According to AFP, TASR writes about it.
“September 22 … The UN Security Council will call an extraordinary meeting in response to the unscrupulous disturbance of the Estonian airspace by Russia last Friday,” the Estonian Minisattempt’s statement stated.
This is the first time in 34 years of Estonia’s membership to the UN, when this EU Member State and NATO officially applied for an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council.
An incident are considered a provocation
Three Russian MiG-31 fighters disrupted the Estonian airspace on the island of Vainloo in the Gulf of Finland. Russian aircraft reportedly flew without a flight plan, with the transponders off and did not communicate with the control center of the Estonian airspace.
The Russian aircraft were sent by Italian F-35 fighters, which act as part of the Baltic Air Polishing Mission to support air defense in the Baltic States. Member States of the European Union and NATO incident identified as a new dangerous provocation, but Moscow refapplyd. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tion stated that the disruption is “part of a wider model of escalation (tension) by Russia, both at regional and global level”, after the disruption of the Polish and Romanian airspace earlier this month.
“This behavior requires an international reaction,” Tion stated.
