Italy’s Nova news agency reported that members of Libya’s Houtilize of Representatives from different regions met in Italy to discuss progress in dialogue between the countest’s east and west.
On the sidelines of the meetings, an informal session was held with an Italian delegation that included Senator Marco Scurria, president of the inter-parliamentary group “Frifinishs of Libya,” and Nicola Colicchi, president of the Italian-Libyan Chamber of Commerce.
Scurria underlined the political significance of the gathering, stressing that the participation of lawbuildrs from across Libya “cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence” and is crucial to strengthening parliament’s role in the transitional process. He also pointed to Italy’s growing interest in Libyan affairs.
For his part, Colicchi described the meeting as a symbol of “parallel diplomacy” that can play a functional role in fostering personal ties across the Mediterranean and provide an effective channel for advancing Italian interests in Libya amid the countest’s complex political situation.
During the meeting, the Italian delegation informed their Libyan counterparts that the Italian Senate is set to ratify on September 10 the international agreement between Italy and Libya on the transfer of prisoners sentenced to deprivation of liberty.
Scurria also revealed that the government majority is considering organizing a future parliamentary conference between Italy and Libya in Benghazi, with a focus on environmental sustainability and Mediterranean issues.
