A sweeping majority of European educators now admit artificial intelligence has outpaced their schools’ ability to control it. New research from Epson reveals that more than 80% of teachers across six European nations see AI flooding into classrooms faster than institutions can respond.
The survey captured responses from roughly 3,360 teachers in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Poland during July and August 2026. Their concern lands at a critical moment, as the EU AI Act begins enforcement. Schools now face legal pressure to prove staff possess adequate AI literacy for whatever tools they deploy.
Students, not administrators, appear to be driving the surge. Roughly 76% of teachers said pupils expect to use AI in their learning, and 87% of those students already tap some form of the technology at least weekly.
Yet educators remain deeply skeptical about the outcome. A full 68% agreed that when students lean on AI to finish assignments, learning suffers. Meanwhile, 81% reported hearing students claim they no longer need basic spelling or arithmetic skills because software handles those tasks automatically.
Grade integrity also worries the profession. Around 72% of teachers suspect students receive marks they have not earned thanks to AI assistance. And 88% believe pupils view the technology as a shortcut that bypasses critical thinking entirely.
The training gap compounds the problem. A striking 82% of teachers want more guidance on supervising student AI use, while 78% seek training for applying the tools in their own work.
Dr. Sarah Henkelmann-Hillebrand, who leads education initiatives at Epson Europe, stressed that AI’s rapid evolution demands effective governance, clear guidelines and proper training. She also pointed toward potential benefits, suggesting that immersive learning spaces combining projection technology with AI could foster collaboration and build skills students will need in an AI-dominated future.
The findings represent the first wave of data from Epson’s Educate to Empower 2026 Research. Additional results will emerge in the months ahead, likely sharpening the picture of how European schools grapple with this unprecedented technological shift.
