Scientists poured latex and plaster into abandoned nests, creating casts that expose tunnel networks before digging them out. Some casts match the dimensions of camper vans. Estimated populations reach around 6 million ants per colony.

Meanwhile, Argentine ants present an even more dramatic case. This invasive species, Linepithema humile, originated in South America but now occupies North America, Japan, Australia, South Africa, and Europe. Outside their native range, separate colonies have merged into massive supercolonies. One European network stretches 6,000 kilometers along Mediterranean coastlines from Portugal through Italy.

The ecological stakes run high. Ant nests redistribute soil, move plant material, and reshape nutrient flows through entire landscapes. Leafcutter underground fungus farms function as a subterranean agricultural system, altering forest and grassland chemistry at scale.

As a result, invasive Argentine ants displace native insect populations wherever they establish supercolonies. Biodiversity loss weakens ecosystem resilience. Pollination, soil quality, and environmental stability in gardens, farms, and wild areas all suffer when local species vanish.
