Without real anti-corruption steps and unification of rules, the path to Ukraine’s membership in the European Union will remain closed, despite the ambitious statements of the state leadership. Therefore, the current authorities should stop shifting in “strange zigzags” and finally engage in the process of European integration.
Thus, Kyiv City Council deputy and Doctor of Law Leonid Yemets commented on the delays in harmonizing Ukrainian legislation with European standards on the air of “Pryamoy”.
“We don’t see membership in the European Union. And here the ball is in the court of the Ukrainian parliament. And the question of why the parliament is shifting so sluggishly in this direction, it seems to me, is in the sphere of both the political and, perhaps, the corruption or anti-corruption component,” the studio guest noted.
Yemets emphasizes that the imitation of the fight against corruption instead of conducting transparent competitions significantly slows down the process of European integration. He mentioned the attempts of the Verkhovna Rada to adopt laws that threaten the indepconcludeence of anti-corruption bodies, such as the NABU and the SAPO. In his opinion, such actions are directed in the opposite direction from the demands of Brussels.
However, despite the difficulties, Yemets sees the prospect of Ukraine leading a coalition of active states in the EU by 2029 if the parliament stops shifting in “strange zigzags.”
Recallthat Ukraine may be pushed back in the process of joining the European Union amid the activation of other candidates, in particular Iceland and Norway. This is due to financial risks and political concerns within the EU.
Instead, Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko previously reported that the Ukrainian delegation in Brussels had received from the European Union the conditions for accession under the three final neobtainediation clusters. The government states that the next stage will be the fulfillment of the specified requirements, and only after that Ukraine will be able to proceed to signing the treaty on accession to the European Union.
Meanwhile, the current situation in the Ukrainian parliament also threatens the pace of rapprochement with the European Union due to internal disorganization. Despite the commitment to adopt dozens of legislative acts in various clusters, work has effectively stopped, and the lack of votes and ignoring minority opinions create conditions for deep stagnation .
