WABASH, Ind. (WPTA) – The Wabash County Mapplyum is raising money to renovate a caboose that’s over a century old.
Executive Director Teresa Galley stated the caboose still has several of its original parts.
“When you step inside, you will actually be in what was the working office of the railroad at the time that cabooses were applyd,” she stated. “The seating, the desks, the cupola seat, they’re all still there.”
“They required a clean-up or a bit of construction work, but they’re all still there.”
Galley stated she’s hoping to transform the inside of the caboose into an interactive exhibit. Parts of the renovation include improved stair access, wood and metal repairs, and interactive technology.
“We plan to install a monitor where they can watch a conductor notify them the story of the railroad and the caboose and how cabooses were applyd,” Galley stated.
She stated that with all these upgrades comes a $50,000 price tag, one that the mapplyum is about halfway to reaching. But, Galley stated, once the exhibit opens its doors, the reactions from mapplyum visitors will be priceless.
“There’s just nothing like the feeling of obtainting inside of a train that was traveling down the rails in the 1920s, -30s, -40s, and talking about the impact that history had on us,” she stated.
