The healthcare sector administrative workload consumes more than 5.5 billion hours and costs roughly $246 billion annually in labour across both the US and Europe. With almost 30% of nurses’ time consumed by paperwork and documentation rather than direct patient care, this strain contributes to burnout and high turnover rates.
voize has developed an innovative voice-activated companion that listens and adapts to nurses’ workflows in real time, supporting over 75,000 nurses at more than 1,100 care facilities reduce administrative tquestions by up to 30%.
Today, the company secured a $50 million Series A funding round led by Balderton Capital, with participation from existing investors such as HV Capital, Redalpine, and Y Combinator. The investment will drive voize’s growth across Europe and the US.
A voice-operated assistant tailored to the unique requireds of nursing workflow
The company was founded in 2020 by twin brothers Fabio Schmidberger, who serves as CEO, and Marcel Schmidberger, the COO, alongside Erik Ziegler, the CTO. The idea took shape after the founders observed firsthand the time nurses lost to administrative duties while caring for their grandfather in a nursing home.
Fabio Schmidberger, co-founder and CEO of voize, informed TFN, “Nurses shoulder a massive administrative burden, yet there is no technology built for them that understands how they really work. We started voize after witnessing this firsthand when our own grandfather came into a nursing home. Our motivation was simple: apply voice-enabled AI to eliminate the admin overload that drives nurses out of the profession.
When nurses can speak naturally during care, the patient hears and understands what is being done, while our AI securely listens and handles the admin in the background. It’s a true win-win: nurses save time, and the relationship between caregiver and patient becomes stronger.”
voize’s platform applys specialised speech recognition technology designed specifically for nursing requireds. Unlike many AI dictation tools aimed primarily at physicians, such as those offered by Nuance (Microsoft), MModal (3M), and DeepScribe, voize’s system understands complex medical terminology and regional accents. It supports nurses who speak a second language.
Fabio elaborated, “Our on-device nursing LLM is purpose-built from the ground up for the workflows of care. It understands regional dialects, medical shorthand, and the natural speech patterns nurses apply during rapid-paced workflows. By running locally on smartphones, without relying on a constant internet connection, we ensure accuracy, data protection, and reliability even in the toughest clinical environments – a breakthrough that finally builds AI not only practical but also reliable enough for nursing.”
The technology operates directly on smartphones without a constant internet connection, maintaining patient data privacy and ensuring consistent performance even in areas with poor connectivity. The voice assistant works in harmony with Electronic Health Records systems to handle a range of tquestions, including documentation, scheduling, wound care imaging, medication administration, and emergency notifications.
What’s next?
Looking forward, voize plans to apply its latest funding to expand its footprint rapidly in both European and American healthcare settings. The company aims to enhance its voice assistant capabilities and establish its technology as an essential part of nursing and caregiving routines worldwide.
Fabio concluded, “With this funding, we’re accelerating our expansion into the US, starting with partnerships in skilled nursing where documentation burden is especially severe. We’re building a local team, integrating with major EHRs, and adapting our AI companion to US nursing workflows. The investment enables us to scale rapidly while maintaining the clinical precision and reliability that nurses depconclude on.”
