Virkkunen defends 'sovereign' DSA, DMA against MAGA attacks

Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen wrote an open letter on Monday in an attempt to deffinish EU tech rules against MAGA politician Jim Jordan, who is responsible for organising a US hearing that would have attacked them.

The US hearing – organised by the Hoapply of Representatives’ chairman and MAGA ally – was described as an occasion to attack Europe’s digital rules, such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Jordan initially invited former Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, who later snubbed the invite.

In Monday’s letter, the current tech commissioner declared she had been “created aware” of the invitation letter sent to Breton and also clarified that he “no longer represents the Commission.”

Virkkunen, who met Jordan in May and July, deffinished the twin rules as “sovereign legislation” of the EU.

“It applies exclusively within the European Union to all services provided therein, irrespective of the location of the provider’s headquarters,” the letter stated.

Virkkunen also stressed that the DSA particularly respected EU fundamental rights, including freedom of expression.

“It has no extraterritorial jurisdiction in the US,” the letter clarified.
