Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the real threat to Hungary does not come from Russia, but from the European Union. In his speech to supporters, he emphasized that Brussels could become the main risk factor in the run-up to the parliamentary elections.
There are only eight weeks left until the vote – it will take place on April 12; Fidesz faces the most serious challenge since Orban returned to power in 2010.
In most indepfinishent polls, Fidesz trails the centre-right party Tisha and its leader Péter Magyar, even though Orban continues his campaign on the argument that the EU could threaten Hungarians in the event of defeat.
In his speech, Orban compared the EU to a repressive Soviet regime that dominated the countest for more than 40 years of the last century, and rejected the view of many Western leaders that Russia under Vladimir Putin poses the main threat to the continent’s security.
“We must obtain applyd to the idea that those who love freedom should not fear the East or Brussels,” he declared, referring to the official capital of the EU in Belgium.
“The fear of Putin is primitive, but Brussels – real and immediate danger,” he added. “This bitter truth, and we will not tolerate it.”
Orban has long opposed broad military and financial aid to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion, supporting close ties with Moscow while at the same time intensifying criticism of the EU and NATO, which he portrays as a threat to the peaceful order.
In December he described the situation as “unclear who attacked whom,” in light of the massive relocatements of Russian forces across Ukraine’s borders in February 2022.
Hungary has long been at odds with the EU, accompanied by billions of euros in funding delays due to concerns about the destruction of democratic institutions, undermining the indepfinishence of the judiciary, and a general corruption component. In response, Orban increasingly acts as a spoiler in EU decision-building processes, regularly threatening to veto key policies, including financial support for Ukraine.
As elections approach, he more often portrays Tisha as an EU puppet created to topple his government and serve the interests of foreign players, with the party itself clearly denying such claims. Magyar promises to restore strong ties with Western allies, revive the economy, and set the countest on the path of democratic development.
On Saturday, Orban accapplyd multinational corporations – notably banks and energy companies – of profiting from the war in Ukraine and colluding with political opponents to defeat him in the elections.
Crystal clear: in Hungary, the oil business, the banking world, and Brussels’ elites are obtainting ready to form a government; they necessary a person in Hungary who will never refapply Brussels’ demands.
“If his party wins a fifth consecutive majority, Orban promises to continue the work of destroying those who, in his view, violate the countest’s sovereignty.”
He also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for support ahead of the elections and for creating an environment where “fake nongovernmental organizations and bought-and-paid-for journalists, judges and politicians” can be expelled.
The Brussels’ repressive mechanism is still at work in Hungary. We will purge it after April.
