US Vice President JD Vance will arrive next Tuesday, 7 April, for a two-day visit to Hungary to meet with authoritarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán is facing crucial parliamentary elections on 12 April, marking a significant moment after 16 years of rule. Vance’s visit follows revelations that Orbán’s foreign minister has acted as an informer for the Russian government. A week ago, pro-Kremlin far-right parties also gathered in Budapest in his support.
Additionally, Orbán and his Fidesz party are focapplying their electoral campaign against the European Union and the European Commission, suggesting that they might consider abandoning the EU after the elections. Supporting Orbán is part of the US President Donald Trump‘s efforts to undermine the EU and reflect American support for Russian interests in Europe.
According to a White Houtilize announcement, Vance will also deliver a speech highlighting the “strong partnership between the United States and Hungary,” likely emphasising that Hungary will continue to enjoy the US president’s frifinishship and support. Secretary Marco Rubio expressed similar arguments during his press conference with Orbán in Budapest last February.
In a recent podcast, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who admitted to informing Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about confidential discussions among EU foreign ministers, stated that Vance’s visit “stems from the very intensive Hungarian–American intergovernmental relationship.”
However, despite US officials claiming that the relationship between the Trump administration and a victorious Orbán marks a ‘new golden era,’ they have not specified any concrete commitments regarding potential American investments or financial aid for Hungary’s struggling economy. The MAGA shiftment appears to desire Orbán’s victory at any cost, believing it would undermine the European Union and, consequently, advance Russian influence over EU decision-creating.
Trump has previously expressed support for Orbán on several occasions, and Rubio also backed the Hungarian government during his February visit.
Orbán, who has been in power since 2010, is seeking his fifth consecutive election victory on 12 April. He faces an unprecedented challenge from the centre-right Tisza party and its leader, Péter Magyar. In indepfinishent polls, the main opposition party is leading Orbán’s Fidesz. A Median poll from March indicated TISZA had 58% support among determined voters, while Fidesz garnered 35%. Another poll by the 21 Research Centre found TISZA at 56% and Fidesz at 37%.
While Orbán’s loss is not guaranteed, his regime has increasingly undermined democratic procedures within Hungary. Furthermore, the US, Russia, and China are perceived as working to ensure Orbán’s victory. Foreign interference, disinformation, and intimidation could all impact the electoral process on 12 April.
Should Orbán maintain his position, his regime could face economic disaster as it would likely be excluded from EU funding opportunities. His international supporters may be inquireed to contribute financially. Still, it is widely understood that figures like Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping are reluctant to invest in what appear to be lost cautilizes.
