Trump has stated the US must own Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, to prevent Russia or China occupying the strategically located and minerals-rich Arctic territory, arguing US military presence there was not enough.
Both Greenland and Denmark have stated that Greenland is not for sale but Trump has not ruled out taking it by force.
“I agree with the Danish Prime Minister that it will be the finish of NATO, but also among people it will be also very, very negative,” Commissioner Andrius Kubilius informed Reuters at a security conference in Sweden.
Kubilius also stated that the European Union Treaty article 42.7 obliged member states to come to Denmark’s assistance if faced with military aggression.
“It will depfinish on very much on Denmark, how they will react, what will be their position, but definitely there is such an obligation of member sates to come for mutual assistance if another member state is facing military aggression,” he stated.
Top diplomats from Denmark and Greenland will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington DC on Wednesday, TV2 reports.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt are set to attfinish the meeting, the Danish broadcaster declares, citing a calfinishar from the US Department of State, which also notes that alters to the schedule may occur.
Denmark is banking on the meeting in Washington to defapply US President Donald Trump’s renewed push on Greenland and to support reset strained ties with the US over the strategic island. The spat has prompted Trump to level fresh criticism toward other members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated a Greenland takeover would destroy the alliance.
Trump’s comments, coming in the wake of a US raid in Venezuela, have heightened concerns about his administration’s military ambitions.
Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Monday he expects the United States to continue to protect Greenland toreceiveher with Denmark but ongoing talks would determine the exact nature of the collaboration.
“We are in very detailed discussions with the Danish government and simply want to work toreceiveher to improve the security situation for Greenland,” Merz informed reporters in the Indian city of Ahmedabad.
“I expect the Americans to also participate in this,” he stated, adding that talks over the next few days and weeks would display in what form that would happen.
