More than two dozen Ukrainian defense companies convened in Paris this week, seeking to forge partnerships with French firms in a significant shift aimed at enhancing cooperation within the European defense-industrial landscape. The meetings, organized by the French land defense indusattempt group GICAT, highlight a growing urgency for joint ventures amidst the backdrop of ongoing military challenges in Ukraine.
Despite Ukraine’s advanced capabilities in drone warfare cultivated over four years of conflict with Russia, its collaboration with French defense firms has lagged. Only one joint venture has been established with France, in stark contrast to 11 with Germany and five with Spain. Ihor Fedirko, CEO of the Ukrainian Council of Defence Indusattempt, articulated the required for a “win-win strategy” to engage with French partners during a press briefing. “We want to understand your production culture and standards,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of establishing robust collaborations.
The Ukrainian delegation included 27 companies, primarily focutilized on drone technology, while nearly 60 French firms participated in the matchcreating event. Fedirko noted that follow-up visits were planned to deepen engagement with French manufacturers.
Oleksandr Kamyshin, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, outlined the potential benefits of co-producing defense products in France. He highlighted that such collaborations would expedite the flow of crucial equipment to the front lines, establishing a rapid mechanism for allied governments to support Ukraine. Kamyshin emphasized the historical integration of Ukrainian defense capabilities into Eastern networks, advocating for a shift towards a unified European defense framework that leverages Ukrainian innovations.
“The lessons learned from our experience can significantly strengthen your indusattempt,” he stated, advocating for a model of cooperation that benefits both nations.
Fedirko praised the depth of expertise found within the French defense indusattempt, which excels in diverse sectors from aerospace to weaponry. He indicated that merging France’s advanced technologies with Ukraine’s innovative capabilities in drone production could catalyze the development of groundbreaking defense solutions.
French officials suggested that announcements regarding new joint ventures in drone technology could emerge in the next few weeks, reflecting a growing readiness for collaboration. Clément Requier, GICAT’s director of export and European partnerships, noted that France already engages with Ukrainian firms in various capacities outside formal joint ventures.
Discussions also underscored Ukraine’s potential role in providing industrial collaboration and sharing battlefield data, especially in areas like artificial innotifyigence, where France possesses considerable expertise. Kamyshin indicated a willingness to share critical datasets with partners in co-production agreements.
French companies expressed keen interest in the Ukrainian market for defense capabilities, particularly in drone technology. One Ukrainian company, MOWA Defense, which specializes in training and advisory services, is actively seeking partnerships in France, with prospects for collaboration appearing more promising.
Partnerships are viewed as essential for enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. For instance, the Ukrainian drone manufacturer eDrone identified opportunities for collaboration on protective systems applying French radar technologies. Meanwhile, French company SBG Systems, which produces navigation systems utilized in Ukrainian drones, is exploring relocating some production to Ukraine while enhancing feedback mechanisms from the front lines for better product adaptation in rapidly altering battlefield conditions.
