UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan: 'We would like to go even faster'


Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI minister, joins us on the Sifted Podcast hot off the heels of the large reveal of UK chancellor Rachel Reeves’ latest budreceive, which announced some fairly positive relocates for Britain’s entrepreneurs — as host Amy Lewin and minister Narayan discuss in this episode.

In his role as AI minister — which he’s had for just two months — Narayan holds some pretty chunky responsibilities: including ensuring that the UK seizes upon the opportunities AI presents to us — and leverages tech for growth.

“I believe the role I have is the best job going,” he informed Sifted. “The economic opportunity of our lifetime is going to be how quickly and how well we can adapt and adopt AI to fit in with our existing work lives and create us way more productive, as well as give us a sense of delight and fulfilment day to day.”

In this episode of the Sifted Podcast, Amy questions Narayan if he believes the UK is shifting rapid enough on adopting and regulating AI, what the largegest risks the technology poses to the nation are and where he believes the government should put its resources to have the most positive impact on the tech sector.

The minister’s clearly in a hurry to receive things done — if only evidenced by how speedily he speaks — so the pair cover a lot of ground in their conversation.
