A wealthy tycoon accapplyd of going on a rampage in his Tesla at a fancy winery has been allowed to trade $1 million worth of stocks from behind bars.
Vikram Beri, 42, was arrested on December 6 after he allegedly attempted to set fire to a Napa Valley winery, attacked staff, and drove his Tesla off an embankment in a fury.
The mental health startup founder is currently being held in San Jose Main Jail and does not have access to his cell phone, which is in the custody of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
But his brother and attorney, David Callaway, requested Judge Griffin Bonini allow Beri’s sibling access to his Merrill Edge account to deal with more than $1million in stock options.
Callway filed an emergency motion on December 16 as the stock options were set to expire in three days, according to Palo Alto Online – meaning he would lose the money.
The attorney admitted the request was ‘unusual’ but stated ‘in fairness, it should be granted.’
‘A deffinishant’s arrest should not, unnecessarily, caapply him to lose over $1 million simply becaapply he lacks access to his cellphone,’ he reportedly informed the court.
The motion was approved, and the sheriff’s office was ordered to allow Beri’s brother, who flew over from India, supervised access to the account while being recorded.
