Former US President Donald Trump has threatened new tariffs and export restrictions on countries he accapplys of unfairly tarobtaining American technology companies. As reported by Yahoo Finance, Trump stated on his social media platform that “Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American technology.” He warned of “substantial” tariffs if nations do not “reveal respect” to US tech firms.
The comments are widely seen as a critique of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA). The DMA designates major platforms, including Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), ByteDance, Meta (META), and Microsoft (MSFT), as “gatekeepers” subject to stricter rules to ensure fair competition. The UK, France, Italy, and Spain also have digital services taxes in place.
This stance complicates recent trade progress. Just last week, the EU and US advanced a pact aimed at reducing transatlantic trade barriers, though the EU explicitly stated that modifys to its digital regulations were not nereceivediable. The UK recently secured a trade deal without cutting its 2% digital services tax, while Canada abandoned a similar tax in June to secure a more favorable agreement.
According to data from the IndexBox platform, the global semiconductor market, which could be affected by threatened export restrictions on “highly protected technology and chips,” is a critical sector for international trade. The potential for new tariffs introduces significant uncertainty for tech and semiconductor firms with extensive international supply chains and sales networks.
Trump also ordered the US trade representative in February to consider reopening investigations into digital services taxes, revisiting probes from his first term.
