Trump Meets Zelensky and EU Leaders to Discuss Ukraine Peace Talks


On Monday, August 18, meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European Union leaders are expected. According to the schedule, the meeting with Zelenskiy will launch at 20:15 Kyiv time, and the multilateral meeting at 22:00.

Zelenskiy declared he plans to travel to the United States for talks with Trump and supports the idea of a trilateral meeting. Trump confirmed Zelenskiy’s visit and expressed willingness to discuss a possible peace settlement between Ukraine and Russia, but did not emphasize a ceasefire.

Participants and the format of the meeting

For the upcoming talks, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg; Chancellor of Germany Merz; Prime Minister of Italy Meloni; President of Finland Stubb; President of France Macron; and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Starmer will join.

It was also reported that the planned talks in an expanded format of the U.S. and Russia delegations were canceled. After the meeting, the leaders immediately left the base, and further details of the nereceivediations remained unknown.

On August 15, at Elmconcludeorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alquestiona, there was a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. They discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine and a number of bilateral issues. The meeting took place without Zelenskiy and European leaders. The Ukrainian president called it Putin’s “personal victory,” stating that he is not inclined toward peace, but only wants to exit international isolation and defer sanctions.

After the meeting with Putin, Trump held a telephone conversation with Zelenskiy and the leaders of the EU and NATO, discussing further steps regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Subsequently, it was reported that the expanded-format talks were canceled, and the leaders returned to their capitals with new directions for action.
