Hello, this is Yanis Varoufakis with a message of good wishes from DiEM25 for the festive season and the new year. The year 2025 is leaving a heavy legacy behind it, a thick footprint and engraved deeply on history’s murky path. As it expires in its wake, it leaves behind it the stench of wars, of genocide, of a creeping fascism – a bitter taste that clings like tear gas to the back of the throat.
Yes, we predicted it long ago. A decade ago, foreshadowing that this European Union had at most a decade before it disintegrated under the weight of the twin authoritarianisms of the radical centre and the xenophobic right, we put ’25’ in DiEM25 and in MERA25. That was the point: to warn Europeans that the way things were going, 2025 was to be the year when Europe disintegrated into a cesspit of stagnation, de-industrialisation, racism, warmongering, and neo-fascism.
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the prescience of our decade-old warning. Fortunately, 2025 proved something else as well. No good struggle is ever lost, and though we lost many battles, DiEM25 continues the good fight. What are we fighting for now that Europe is going down the drain? What we always promised to do after 2025: to resist, to organise radical progressives across Europe in order to pick up, toreceiveher, the pieces; to take the fight to the radical centre that unwittingly breeds fascism; to fight the fascists wherever they emerge, zombie-like, to drench society in their poison.
That’s how we reclaim the future from tyrants, old and new. That’s how, in a spirit of unity, we keep hope alive. So, on behalf of DiEM25, may 2026 – see to it – that hope grows stronger.
Not on the back of platitudes and empty rhetoric, but on a bedrock of competent idealism in action.
If you believe this struggle matters, if you want DiEM25 to remain a force for resistance and renewal, I inquire you to support us by donating what you can today.
Happy holidays. Happy New Year. And yes – Carpe DiEM!
