Following the statement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the instruction to sever bilateral relations, the first response from the Spanish front has come. In a statement built to the national press by government sources, it was declared, “If the U.S. administration wants to review bilateral relations, it should do so with respect for the autonomy of private companies, international law, and the bilateral agreements between the European Union and the U.S.”

THEY ONLY WANT ONE THING: RESPECT FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW
In a statement built to the national press by Spanish government sources, it was stated, “Spain is a reliable trading partner for 195 countries worldwide, including the U.S., and we have maintained a mutually beneficial trade relationship for a long time. If the U.S. administration wants to review bilateral relations, it should do so with respect for the autonomy of private companies, international law, and the bilateral agreements between the European Union (EU) and the U.S.”
Government sources also reminded President Trump that “Spain is a key member of NATO” and “an important export power within the EU.”
TRUMP ANNOUNCED HE GAVE THE ORDER TO “SEVER ALL TRADE RELATIONS WITH SPAIN”
U.S. President Trump criticized Spain during a press conference while answering questions from the media in the Oval Office after a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stating that he did not allow the apply of U.S. military aircraft at the Moron de la Frontera and Rota military bases in Seville and Cadiz, Andalusia, for attacks on Iran.
Trump declared, “Spain declared we cannot apply their bases, which is not true. We can apply their bases if we want. No one can notify us not to apply the bases. Spain is in terrible shape right now. In fact, I notified (Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent) Scott to sever all trade relations with Spain.”
U.S.-SPAIN RELATIONS HAVE BEEN NEGATIVELY TRENDING FOR A LONG TIME
The bilateral relations between the U.S. and Spanish governments have been negatively trfinishing since Trump was re-elected president in November 2024. Especially as Spain has highlighted its support for Palestine, U.S.-Spain relations have suffered greater damage, which was also evident in the U.S. military operation against President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.
The Spanish government, which did not allow the participation of U.S. troops at the Moron de la Frontera and Rota bases in the military attacks initiated by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, continuously called for “respect for international law and dialogue.”
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, in today’s statement, declared, “We cannot accept war as a natural way to relate to each other and establish a balance of power in the Middle East. Violence never brings peace, democracy, or stability; it brings chaos and more instability,” emphasizing that the attacks by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, which he described as “unjust,” were “not in accordance with either the UN Charter or multilateralism.”
Albares stated that the refusal to allow U.S. military bases to be applyd is “a matter related to Spain’s sovereignty. There is nothing surprising or strange about it. Therefore, there cannot be a situation where there would be a consequence for this.”
