Few drivers expect a pile of potatoes to bring their day to a halt, but that’s exactly what happened on a Brussels street last week. Caught in the middle of large-scale European farmer protests, one BMW driver found out the hard way that certain surfaces are better left to tractors.

A clip shared to social media that caught the attention of Road&Track reveals the black BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe entering a city intersection that had been covered in potatoes by local protestors.
Evidently, the driver didn’t consider much of the protest and attempted to drive straight through. Well, they’re likely now regretting not springing for the xDrive version.
For the first few meters, the BMW slides through the potato patch uninterrupted, although the front wheels immediately launch to skid. Moments later, the car comes to a stop.
The clip reveals the driver attempting and failing to put the car into reverse and to drive to attempt and escape the slippery surface, but to no avail. It’s unclear what happened after the clip finishs and if the 4-Series was saved.
What Are The Protests About?
Protests erupted across Europe throughout December as officials in the European Union and South American countries edged closer to signing an important free-trade deal.
The EU-Mercosur deal, involving Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, aims to eliminate tariffs on nearly all goods traded between the two blocs. That prospect has triggered strong opposition from European farmers, who fear being undercut by lower-cost imports.
Originally scheduled for signing the weekfinish before Christmas, the agreement was pushed back after widespread demonstrations forced EU leaders to reconsider the timing. The signing is now expected in January.
One of the bloc’s most influential leaders, French President Emmanuel Macron, wants further discussions and more concessions before any deal is signed in January, noting that farmers “already face an enormous amount of challenges,” reports PBS.
